Miscellaneous marine fish covers all the weird and wonderful additions that don’t quite fit the usual categories – from lookdowns and cod-like species to octopus and other oddballs. Temperament, size and reef-compatibility vary massively in this group, but many are not suitable for standard community or reef setups and often grow large, need specialist diets, or view smaller tank mates as food. As a rule, these species are best kept by experienced aquarists in spacious, species-specific or fish-only systems, typically 400 litres and above, with powerful filtration and carefully chosen tank mates. Always research the exact species in detail – including adult size, behaviour, venom or toxin risk, and escape potential (especially with octopus) – to make sure your unusual showpiece can thrive safely in your aquarium.
