Bettas (Siamese Fighting Fish) are highly territorial, especially males, which must be kept singly as they will fight with other males and often with similar-looking fish. They prefer calm, warm, well-filtered aquariums with gentle flow and plenty of plants, caves and resting spots near the surface. A minimum tank size of around 20–30 litres is recommended for a single Betta, with a secure lid as they can jump and enjoy warm, humid air above the water. They’re generally best kept with peaceful, non-fin-nipping tank mates and should never be housed with other Bettas, flashy long-finned fish or aggressive species that may stress or injure them.
