The Banded Cat Shark, also known as the Brownbanded Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum), is a small, tropical shark species commonly found in the Indo-West Pacific region. This shark is characterised by its slender body, prominent bands or stripes along its length, and a long, whisker-like pair of barbels near its mouth. Typically reaching lengths of up to 1 meter, Banded Cat Sharks are bottom-dwellers, preferring sandy or muddy substrates in shallow coastal waters where they hunt for invertebrates and small fish. They are oviparous, laying distinctive elongated eggs encased in tough, leathery capsules. Due to their relatively small size and docile nature, Banded Cat Sharks are popular in the home aquarium trade. However, their need for large tanks and specific water conditions makes them more suitable for experienced aquarists. Their unique appearance and behaviour make them an interesting and attractive species for both scientific study and marine observation.
