Dwarf cichlids are small, characterful fish with big personalities, known for their interesting behaviour and strong pair bonds. Generally peaceful to mildly territorial, they’re best kept in well-structured community aquariums with plenty of caves, plants and hiding spots, and with tank mates that are calm and not too boisterous. A minimum aquarium size of around 60–80 litres is suitable for a pair, with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water helping them feel at home. Many species show their best colour and behaviour in well-planted tanks with leaf litter or wood, and will thrive on a varied diet of quality pellets, frozen and live foods.
