Puffers and boxfish are curious, characterful fish with strong personalities, but they’re best suited to more experienced keepers due to their special needs and potential risks. Most species are not considered reef-safe, as many will nip at invertebrates, clams and sometimes corals, and boxfish can release toxins if badly stressed, which can endanger the whole tank. Smaller puffers and boxfish generally require a minimum of around 200–250 litres, with larger species needing significantly more room, strong filtration and very stable water quality. They thrive in peaceful fish-only or FOWLR systems with plenty of rockwork to explore, gentle to moderate flow, and tank mates that aren’t fin-nippy or overly aggressive, alongside a varied, meaty diet to keep their teeth and health in good condition.
