Triggerfish are bold, intelligent fish with strong personalities and a generally semi-aggressive to aggressive temperament, so they’re best kept with other robust tank mates. Most species are not considered fully reef-safe, as they may nip at invertebrates, clams and even some corals, especially as they mature. They’re powerful swimmers that need plenty of open space, rockwork and secure hiding spots, with a minimum aquarium size of around 400–500 litres for the smaller species and larger systems required for the big showpiece triggers. Due to their strength and curiosity, a secure lid and sturdy aquascape are essential to prevent jumping and damage to equipment.
