Catfish cover a wide range of freshwater species, from small, peaceful community fish to large, more boisterous or predatory varieties. Most are bottom-dwellers that appreciate dimmer lighting, plenty of hiding spots and a soft sand or smooth gravel substrate. Smaller community catfish can be kept from around 80–100 litres upwards, while larger species and “monster” catfish need very spacious tanks with powerful filtration and high oxygen levels. Many are excellent scavengers but still require a proper, varied diet of sinking pellets, wafers and frozen foods. Always research the specific species for adult size and temperament, as some grow very large or may view small tank mates as food.
