Showa are a sumi-based (black-based) koi variety displaying a tri-colour pattern of black, white and red.
Correctly marked Showa should show sumi on the head as well as the body, with the black wrapping up from the underside of the fish, in contrast to Sanke where the black sits more on the upper surface.
