Danios are fast-swimming, lively schooling fish that add loads of energy to the upper levels of a freshwater aquarium. They’re generally hardy and peaceful, but their constant movement means they’re best kept with other active, non-aggressive tank mates rather than very shy species. A minimum aquarium size of around 60 litres is recommended for a small group, with a longer tank preferred to give them plenty of horizontal swimming space and moderate flow. Danios thrive in cooler to mid-range tropical temperatures, in clean, well-oxygenated water, and should always be kept in groups of at least six to reduce stress and encourage natural shoaling behaviour.
