Description
Hawaiian Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus)
The Hawaiian Moorish Idol, Zanclus cornutus, is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable marine fish in the world, admired for its bold black, white and yellow body pattern, long trailing dorsal filament and elegant disc-shaped profile. Although often associated with the reefs of Hawaii, this species is widespread across the Indo-Pacific and tropical Pacific. It is a truly stunning fish, but it is also one of the more challenging marine species to keep successfully, requiring a large mature aquarium, excellent water quality, peaceful tank mates and a varied, carefully managed diet.
Common Name:
Hawaiian Moorish Idol, Moorish Idol, Idol Fish, Pacific Moorish Idol.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Zanclus cornutus
Maximum Size:
Around 20–25 cm, making it a medium-sized but very active and specialist marine fish that requires substantial swimming space and excellent long-term care.
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found widely across the Indo-Pacific and tropical Pacific, including Hawaii, the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, East Africa, Indonesia, Australia and many island reef systems. In the wild, Moorish Idols inhabit reef flats, lagoon reefs, seaward reefs, hard-bottom habitats and reef slopes. They may be seen singly, in pairs, small groups or larger feeding aggregations where suitable habitat and food are available.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Hardness or Salinity: SG 1.020–1.025
Temperament:
Peaceful but specialist. Moorish Idols are not usually aggressive, but they can be easily stressed by boisterous or territorial tank mates. They are best kept with peaceful to moderately active marine fish that will not bully them or outcompete them at feeding time. Avoid aggressive tangs, triggers, large angels, puffers, predatory wrasses or any fish likely to chase, nip or intimidate them.
Diet:
Specialist omnivorous grazer. In the wild, Moorish Idols feed on a mixture of algae, sponges, tunicates and other benthic invertebrates. In the aquarium, offer a wide variety of foods including sponge-based angelfish preparations, algae sheets, nori, spirulina, mysis shrimp, enriched brineshrimp, chopped clam, mussel, prawn, high-quality marine pellets and specialist gel or paste foods. Multiple smaller feeds per day are strongly recommended. Newly imported specimens can be difficult to settle onto prepared foods, so feeding response should be monitored closely.
Minimum Tank Size:
A practical minimum of around 800–1,000 litres is recommended for a single specimen, with larger mature aquariums strongly preferred. The aquarium should provide open swimming space, mature live rock, grazing surfaces, strong filtration, stable water quality and excellent oxygenation.
Behaviour & Activity:
A graceful and active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time cruising around rockwork and reef surfaces in search of food. The long snout is used to pick at small foods from crevices and reef growths. Moorish Idols may be shy at first but can become bold once feeding confidently. They require a low-stress environment, as poor feeding, bullying or unstable water quality can quickly lead to weight loss. A secure lid is recommended, as startled marine fish can jump.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe with Caution
Moorish Idols may be kept in some reef aquariums, but they are not guaranteed coral safe. They may pick at fleshy LPS corals, soft corals, sponge growth, tunicates, feather dusters, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates, especially if underfed or lacking natural grazing options. They are better suited to carefully planned mature reefs or fish-only with live rock systems where their feeding behaviour can be monitored.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best suited to experienced marine fishkeepers only. Moorish Idols have a reputation for being difficult long-term aquarium fish, mainly due to feeding challenges, shipping stress and their need for a varied natural diet. Choose only alert, well-bodied specimens that are already feeding where possible. Avoid newly set up aquariums, aggressive tank mates and low-nutrient sterile systems with limited grazing. Quarantine, careful acclimation and a strong feeding plan are highly recommended before purchase. This species should be treated as a specialist showpiece fish, not an impulse buy.
Suitable for:
Experienced fishkeepers
