Livebearers, such as guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails, are hardy, active community fish that are perfect for adding colour and constant movement to a freshwater aquarium. They’re generally peaceful and sociable, doing best in small groups with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. A minimum tank size of around 60 litres is recommended for a small group, with clean, well-filtered water and, ideally, slightly harder, alkaline conditions for long-term health. As the name suggests they give birth to live young rather than eggs, so be prepared for regular fry if males and females are kept together!
