Freshwater angelfish are elegant, laterally tall cichlids with calm but semi-territorial temperaments, especially as they pair up and start breeding. They do best in taller aquariums of at least 120 litres, with plenty of vertical space, plants and wood to weave between, and are generally suited to peaceful community setups with non-fin-nipping tank mates. While juveniles are happiest in small groups, adults may form pairs and become protective of their chosen area, particularly around spawning sites. Angelfish thrive in warm, soft to slightly acidic water with gentle flow, and appreciate a varied diet of quality flakes, pellets and frozen foods to keep them in top condition.
