Anemones are beautiful, living centrepieces best suited to mature, very stable reef aquariums, as they can be sensitive to swings in salinity, temperature and nutrients. Many species will naturally host clownfish, creating a classic reef look, but they also pack a strong sting and can damage or irritate nearby corals if they wander. Most need strong lighting, moderate flow and a well-established tank (generally 6+ months old), with a minimum of around 150–200 litres depending on species. Anemones thrive when given a secure spot on rock or in the sand (species dependent), pristine water quality and a varied diet of small meaty foods alongside the energy they gain from their lighting.
