Description
Pine Cone Fish (Monocentris japonica)
The Pine Cone Fish, also commonly known as the Japanese Pineapplefish or Pineconefish, is one of the most unusual marine fish kept in captivity. It has a bright yellow body covered in large bony scutes outlined in black, along with glowing light organs on either side of the lower jaw that house symbiotic bacteria. In the wild it is a nocturnal, cave-loving species that shelters under ledges and among rocky reefs by day, then becomes active after dark. Because it prefers dim conditions, peaceful tankmates and careful feeding, it is best suited to a mature, specialist marine setup rather than a bright, busy community reef.
Common Name:
Pine Cone Fish. It is also commonly known as the Japanese Pineapplefish or Pineconefish.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Monocentris japonica
Maximum Size:
Up to 17 cm in length, although many specimens are more commonly seen at around 12 cm.
Water Type:
Marine.
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found across the Indo-West Pacific, including the Red Sea, southern Africa, Mauritius, southern Japan, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. It is associated with the sublittoral zone, especially rocky reefs, caves and ledges, with adults usually found at around 20–200 metres depth and juveniles occasionally occurring shallower.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18–24°C
pH Range: 8.0–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
Temperament:
Generally peaceful, but this is a shy, slow-moving species that should not be housed with boisterous or highly competitive tankmates. It is often recommended for a calm, dimly lit setup, and some aquarists have the best results in a species-focused aquarium.
Diet:
Carnivorous. Offer finely chopped meaty marine foods such as mysis, enriched brineshrimp and other small frozen foods. Newly imported specimens may need live foods at first to trigger a feeding response, and feeding under lower light conditions can help.
Minimum Tank Size:
Around 250 litres minimum is a sensible practical starting point, although larger calm systems with plenty of shaded cover are often a better long-term fit. Aquarium guidance varies, but most care references agree that this fish does best in a peaceful, dim environment rather than a crowded mixed display.
Behaviour & Activity:
This species is nocturnal and spends much of the day hiding under ledges, in caves or among rockwork. It may be kept singly or in groups, and it is particularly noted for its bioluminescent jaw organs, which likely help it function in dim conditions.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe with Caution
Available aquarium guidance is mixed. Some keepers report no issues with corals or ornamental invertebrates in quiet reef systems, while other care references advise caution because the species may pick at benthic organisms and can struggle badly in bright, competitive reef tanks. In practice, it is safest to monitor carefully around very small ornamental crustaceans and avoid housing it in a fast-paced community reef where it may be outcompeted for food.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This fish does best in a dimly lit, well-established aquarium with plenty of caves, cracks and shaded rockwork. It is slow to feed compared with many common marine fish, and it should never be exposed to copper-based medication, as aquarium care references describe it as highly sensitive to copper. A peaceful setup and close attention to feeding are especially important during acclimation.
Suitable for:
Experienced fishkeepers
Although sometimes described as manageable once settled, it is still a specialist species with unusual lighting, feeding and acclimation needs, so experienced care is the safer recommendation.
Availability:
Occasional in trade. It is a recognised aquarium species and is regularly displayed in public aquaria, but it remains a more unusual specialist fish rather than a routine beginner marine choice.
