Marine shrimps are peaceful, fascinating invertebrates that make brilliant additions to reef and community saltwater aquariums, often acting as natural cleaners by picking parasites and leftover food from rocks and even fish. Most popular species, such as cleaner, blood and peppermint shrimps, are reef-safe and won’t harm corals, but they are vulnerable to aggressive or predatory fish, so tank mates must be chosen with care. They do best in mature, stable marine systems from around 60–80 litres upwards, with plenty of rockwork and crevices to hide in and no copper-based treatments. Gentle acclimation, especially to salinity, is essential for long-term success, and a varied diet of fine meaty foods will keep them active, healthy and on display.
