Clown Triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum)

The Clown Triggerfish is one of the most striking and instantly recognisable marine triggerfish, displaying a dramatic combination of black, white and yellow patterning across a deep, powerful body. Its bold colouration, intelligent behaviour and confident personality make it an impressive centrepiece fish, but this species becomes large, highly territorial and strongly predatory as it matures. It is best suited to very large marine aquariums with robust tankmates and experienced care.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Clown Triggerfish has a broad Indo-Pacific distribution and is associated with clear coral reefs, lagoons, reef slopes and outer reef environments.

Adults are typically found around substantial rocky and coral structure where they can establish territories, shelter within caves and forage for hard-bodied prey.

The Clown Triggerfish is highly territorial and can become extremely aggressive once established.

It is generally safest to keep a single specimen unless housed in an exceptionally large aquarium with carefully selected, equally robust tankmates.

Smaller fish and timid species should be avoided.

Diet:
Carnivore / Predatory

Offer a varied diet of meaty marine foods including chopped prawn, mussel, cockle, squid, krill and pieces of marine fish.

Hard-shelled foods can also be offered periodically to encourage natural biting behaviour and provide enrichment for its powerful jaws.

Its potential adult size of around 50 cm, powerful build and territorial behaviour mean the Clown Triggerfish requires a very large aquarium with extensive swimming space and robust aquascaping.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Clown Triggerfish is an active, intelligent and highly inquisitive marine fish.

It spends much of its time patrolling the aquarium, investigating rockwork and searching for food. Mature individuals can become strongly possessive of caves and sections of the aquarium.

Provide substantial open swimming space alongside large caves and secure rock structures.

Rockwork should be firmly positioned, as triggerfish can move loose stones, shells and smaller decorative items while feeding or rearranging their territory.

Reef Safe:
Not Reef Safe

The Clown Triggerfish should not be considered reef safe.

Its natural predatory behaviour means ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, urchins and other mobile invertebrates are likely to be attacked or consumed.

It may also damage coral structures indirectly through biting, feeding and rearranging rockwork.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species should only be purchased with its eventual adult size and aggressive nature fully considered.

Provide a very large, mature aquarium with powerful biological and mechanical filtration, strong oxygenation and substantial open swimming room.

Tankmates must be chosen with extreme caution. Even large robust fish may be challenged by an established adult.

Provide large caves and hiding places, but ensure all rockwork is securely positioned.

Like other triggerfish, the Clown Triggerfish has exceptionally powerful teeth and jaws. Care should be taken during aquarium maintenance, particularly around mature territorial individuals.

A tightly fitted aquarium lid is recommended.
