Description

Velvet Angel (Chaetodontoplus melanosoma)

The Velvet Angel is an elegant and distinctive marine angelfish recognised for its deep charcoal to black body colour, subtle contrasting facial markings and refined overall appearance. Active, intelligent and increasingly confident once settled, it makes an impressive centrepiece for a mature marine aquarium. Like many large angelfish, it is best considered reef safe with caution due to the possibility of nipping at corals, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates.

Common Name:
Velvet Angel, Black Velvet Angelfish

Scientific Name (Latin):
Chaetodontoplus melanosoma

Maximum Size:
Approximately 20–25 cm

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Velvet Angel occurs in tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is commonly associated with coral-rich reef slopes, rocky areas and deeper reef structure.

It spends much of its time moving through complex rockwork while grazing and searching for small food items across reef surfaces.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

Temperament:
Semi-Aggressive

The Velvet Angel is generally confident and may become territorial, particularly towards other angelfish or similarly shaped fish.

It is best housed with peaceful to moderately robust tankmates that can tolerate its presence without being overly aggressive.

Diet:
Omnivore / Grazer

The Velvet Angel naturally feeds on a mixture of sponges, algae, small benthic organisms and other material found across reef surfaces.

In the aquarium, offer a varied diet including quality angelfish preparations containing sponge, marine algae, spirulina-based foods, frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and suitable marine pellets.

Regular varied feeding is important for maintaining strong colouration and healthy body condition.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 400 litres

A spacious aquarium with substantial rockwork and plenty of open swimming space is recommended.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Velvet Angel is an active reef-dwelling fish that spends much of the day moving through rockwork, caves and open areas.

It appreciates a complex aquascape with plenty of sheltered spaces where it can retreat if disturbed.

Once established, it usually becomes increasingly visible and confident.

Reef Safe:
With Caution

The Velvet Angel should be considered reef safe with caution.

It may nip at fleshy corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates.

Individual behaviour varies, but it is generally better suited to carefully planned reef systems or fish-only marine aquariums.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with stable water chemistry, strong filtration and substantial established rockwork.

A varied diet containing both marine vegetable matter and sponge-based angelfish foods is strongly recommended.

Avoid housing multiple large angelfish together unless the aquarium is sufficiently spacious and contains extensive visual barriers.

Monitor new specimens carefully to ensure they are feeding consistently and maintaining body weight.

Stable water quality, good oxygenation and regular feeding are important for long-term success.

A secure aquarium lid is recommended, particularly during acclimation.

Suitable for:
Intermediate to Experienced
