Montipora are versatile SPS corals that come in plating, branching and encrusting forms, ideal for adding structure and colour to mid–high areas of the reef. They prefer moderate to high light and strong, turbulent flow, but are generally a bit more forgiving than Acropora, making them a popular “next step” SPS. Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, along with low but present nutrients, are key for good colour and growth. In a mature, well-maintained system, Montipora will quickly encrust, plate out or branch into impressive, reef-filling colonies.
