Description

Tropic Thunder Montipora (Montipora sp.)

Tropic Thunder Montipora is a striking SPS coral valued for its vivid colour contrast, textured surface and attractive spreading growth. Under suitable reef lighting, it can develop an eye-catching display across the rockwork, making it a popular choice for reef keepers looking to add bold colour and structure to a stable SPS system.

Common Name:
Tropic Thunder Montipora, Tropic Thunder Monti, Montipora Coral

Scientific Name (Latin):
Montipora sp.

Coral Type:
SPS Coral

Growth Form:
Encrusting to plating growth form, spreading across rockwork and developing textured growth as it matures.

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Montipora corals are found across Indo-Pacific reef environments, typically growing on reef slopes, lagoons and well-lit rockwork where they receive clear water, steady flow and strong tropical reef lighting.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Alkalinity: 7–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrate: Low but detectable
Phosphate: Low but detectable

Lighting:
MEDIUM TO HIGH
Tropic Thunder Montipora is best kept under medium to high reef lighting, where its colours can develop strongly without shocking the coral. Introduce it gradually to brighter areas, especially if it has come from lower light, and avoid sudden increases in intensity.

Flow:
MEDIUM TO HIGH
Provide moderate to strong indirect, random flow to help keep the surface clear of detritus and support healthy gas exchange. Avoid harsh, direct flow that constantly blasts one area of tissue, as this may cause stress or recession.

Placement:
Place on stable middle to upper rockwork where the coral can receive strong light and good water movement. Allow space around it so it can encrust and spread naturally without being shaded or crowded by faster-growing corals.

Temperament / Aggression:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive
Montipora does not usually have long sweeper tentacles, but it can compete for space as it grows and may overgrow nearby rockwork. Keep it away from more aggressive LPS corals and allow sensible spacing to avoid stinging or shading.

Feeding:
Photosynthetic, but benefits from feeding
This coral gains most of its energy from light through its symbiotic zooxanthellae. It may also benefit from fine coral foods, amino acids and very small particulate foods in a mature reef system, although heavy feeding is not required.

Growth Rate:
Moderate
In a stable reef aquarium, Tropic Thunder Montipora can grow steadily once settled, spreading across the rockwork and forming a more established textured structure over time. Growth is strongly linked to stable alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, lighting and flow.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Like most SPS corals, Tropic Thunder Montipora does best in a mature, stable reef aquarium with consistent alkalinity and low but measurable nutrients. Avoid large parameter swings, sudden lighting changes and detritus settling on the coral surface. Regular coral dipping and careful inspection are recommended before introduction, particularly for pests such as Montipora-eating nudibranchs. Watch for pale tissue, colour loss or recession, as these can indicate instability, excessive light, poor flow or nutrient imbalance.

Suitable for:
Intermediate reefkeepers
