Fungia (plate corals) are single-polyp LPS that sit flat on the sandbed, adding bold shape and movement with their radiating ridges and extending tentacles. They generally prefer low to moderate light and gentle, indirect flow so their tissue can expand without being blasted or buried. Fungia should be placed on open sand rather than sharp rock, and given space from other corals as they can have a reasonably strong sting. In a mature, stable reef with sensible placement and occasional small meaty feeds, they’re hardy, eye-catching showpieces that will inflate, move slightly and even right themselves if knocked over.
