Yellow Goby (Gobiodon okinawae)

The Yellow Goby is a small and colourful marine goby recognised for its bright yellow body, compact shape and characteristic habit of resting among branching coral structure. Peaceful, reef compatible with some caution and well suited to smaller established marine aquariums, it spends much of its time perched on rockwork or coral branches while watching its surroundings. Its manageable size and engaging behaviour make it a popular choice for nano and community reef systems.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Yellow Goby occurs in tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is closely associated with branching coral habitats.

It typically shelters among coral branches where it can remain protected from larger fish while feeding on small planktonic and reef-associated foods.

The Yellow Goby is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish and is well suited to calm community aquariums.

It may become territorial towards other small gobies occupying the same preferred perching areas, particularly in smaller aquariums.

Diet:
Carnivore / Planktivore

The Yellow Goby naturally feeds on tiny zooplankton and other small reef-associated organisms.

In the aquarium, offer a varied diet including frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine foods and suitably small marine pellets.

Several small feeds throughout the day are beneficial due to its small size and active metabolism.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 50 litres

Its very small adult size makes the Yellow Goby suitable for nano marine aquariums, provided stable water chemistry, suitable shelter and regular feeding are maintained.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Yellow Goby is primarily a perching fish and spends much of its time resting on rockwork, coral branches or other elevated surfaces.

It often remains in a preferred territory and makes short swimming movements to feed or investigate its surroundings.

Provide plenty of secure perching areas, caves and sheltered reef structure.

A fitted aquarium lid is recommended, particularly during acclimation when small gobies may jump if startled.

Reef Safe:
With Caution

The Yellow Goby is generally suitable for reef aquariums and does not normally damage most healthy corals or ornamental invertebrates.

However, it may perch repeatedly on branching corals and can occasionally nip or irritate coral tissue, particularly around preferred resting or spawning areas.

For this reason, it is best considered reef safe with caution.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with stable water chemistry and plenty of secure rockwork or branching structures for perching.

Avoid very aggressive or fast-feeding tankmates that may intimidate the goby or prevent it from obtaining enough food.

Several small meals throughout the day help maintain healthy body condition.

Where valuable branching SPS corals are present, monitor for repeated perching or tissue irritation.

Good filtration and consistent water quality are particularly important in smaller aquariums where conditions can change quickly.
