Yellow-finned Barrier Reef Clownfish (Amphiprion akindynos)

The Yellow-finned Barrier Reef Clownfish, Amphiprion akindynos, is a bold and attractive marine clownfish with an orange to orange-brown body, two black-edged white bars and pale to yellow-toned finnage that is especially noticeable in younger fish. Also known as the Barrier Reef Anemonefish or Barrier Reef Clownfish, this species is naturally associated with lagoon and outer reef habitats around Australia. Hardy once settled and full of character, it is best kept as a single specimen or compatible pair in a mature marine aquarium with stable water quality and carefully chosen tank mates.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Western Pacific, especially eastern Australia and nearby reef systems including the Great Barrier Reef region. In the wild, Barrier Reef Clownfish occur on lagoon and outer reefs, where they live in close association with host sea anemones and nearby reef structure. They form pairs or small social groups, with the largest fish usually being the female.

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive. Generally hardy and manageable, but like many clownfish it can become territorial, especially once paired, settled or breeding. It may defend a chosen corner, cave, coral, anemone or powerhead area against other fish. Avoid mixing with other clownfish species unless the aquarium is very large and carefully planned.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Offer a varied marine diet including quality marine pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, enriched brineshrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, cyclops, krill and algae-based foods such as spirulina. Feed small amounts once or twice daily, and more frequently for juveniles or conditioning pairs.

Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 120 litres is recommended for a single specimen or compatible pair, with larger aquariums preferred for community setups. Provide rockwork, shelter and open swimming space.

Behaviour & Activity:
A confident midwater to reef-associated clownfish that usually stays close to its chosen territory rather than roaming the full aquarium. It may adopt an anemone if one is present, but an anemone is not essential for aquarium success. Pairs may clean a spawning site and lay eggs on rock or another hard surface, with the male helping guard and tend the eggs.

Safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates. It may become territorial around a hosted anemone, coral or chosen nest area, and can occasionally irritate some corals if it tries to use them as a substitute host.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Keep in a mature, stable marine aquarium with good filtration, regular maintenance and a secure lid. Introduce only one individual or a compatible pair to avoid aggression. Do not mix with other clownfish species in smaller aquariums. If keeping with an anemone, the aquarium must be mature and suitable for the anemone’s lighting, flow and stability needs. Captive-bred specimens are preferred where available, as they usually adapt more readily to aquarium foods and conditions.
