Description

Yellow Chromis (Chromis analis)

The Yellow Chromis is a bright, elegant chromis with a golden-yellow to brownish-yellow body, sometimes lighter fins, and a distinctive silvery pale crescent beneath the eye. In the wild it inhabits steep outer reef slopes and rocky bottoms, where it is found singly or in small groups and feeds on plankton in open water. In the aquarium it makes an attractive, active addition to a peaceful marine setup, but it is best kept in a mature system with good swimming space and stable water quality.

Common Name:
Yellow Chromis. It is also commonly known as the Yellow Puller.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Chromis analis

Maximum Size:
Up to 17 cm in length.

Water Type:
Marine.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found across the tropical Indo-West Pacific, including Indonesia east to Micronesia and Fiji, north to Taiwan and southern Japan, and south to Australia. It is most often associated with outer reef slopes, drop-offs and rocky reef areas, generally from about 10 metres downward.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 7.9–8.3
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
These values are based on established aquarium guidance for chromis and damselfish as a group, and are a sensible practical guide for this species in captivity.

Temperament:
Generally peaceful, though like many chromis it may squabble with its own kind if space is limited or social balance is poor. It is best kept with other calm marine fish rather than aggressive tankmates.

Diet:
Carnivorous / planktivorous. In the wild it feeds on zooplankton, including planktonic crustaceans and copepods. In captivity it should be offered a varied diet of small meaty marine foods, with quality pellets or flakes and occasional algae-based foods also useful as part of a balanced feeding routine.

Minimum Tank Size:
200 litres minimum is a sensible practical recommendation, especially if keeping more than one chromis. This is based on general chromis husbandry guidance together with this species’ adult size and active swimming behaviour.

Behaviour & Activity:
An active, diurnal open-water fish that benefits from free swimming room as well as rockwork for security. It is naturally seen singly or in small groups, and in captivity it tends to do best in a calm, established aquarium where it is not constantly outcompeted at feeding time.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
This is a reasoned aquarium inference based on its planktivorous diet, open-water behaviour and general chromis husbandry, rather than evidence of coral-feeding or invertebrate predation. As with any community fish, normal observation is still advised after introduction.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a well-established marine aquarium with moderate water movement, open swimming areas and enough rockwork to provide cover and retreat space. Good water quality and regular feeding are important for long-term success.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate marine keepers, provided the aquarium is mature and properly maintained. That suitability is based on general chromis care guidance and this species’ relatively straightforward feeding habits.

Availability:
Occasional in trade. This is an informed inference based on the species being available in the aquarium hobby, but appearing less routinely referenced than the more standard chromis species.
