Description
Soapy Grouper (Grammistes sexlineatus)
The Soapy Grouper is a striking and unusual marine predator recognised for its dark body covered with contrasting pale horizontal lines and spots. Also known as the Sixline Soapfish, it is a secretive but powerful ambush predator that becomes increasingly confident once established. Best suited to experienced marine aquarists, this species requires a spacious aquarium, carefully selected tankmates and excellent water quality.
Common Name:
Soapy Grouper, Sixline Soapfish
Scientific Name (Latin):
Grammistes sexlineatus
Maximum Size:
Approximately 25–30 cm
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Soapy Grouper occurs in tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is commonly associated with caves, rocky ledges, reef slopes and sheltered areas with substantial cover.
It often remains close to caves and crevices during brighter periods before becoming more active when feeding.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Temperament:
Semi-Aggressive / Predatory
The Soapy Grouper is generally not excessively aggressive towards fish that are too large to swallow.
However, it is a capable predator and may consume smaller fish and ornamental crustaceans.
Tankmates should therefore be robust and appropriately sized.
Diet:
Carnivore / Ambush Predator
The Soapy Grouper naturally feeds on small fish and crustaceans.
In the aquarium, offer a varied diet including chopped prawn, shrimp, squid, mussel, krill and other suitable marine meaty foods.
Quality carnivore pellets may also be accepted once the fish is established.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 500 litres
A spacious aquarium with substantial secure rockwork, caves and open swimming room is recommended.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Soapy Grouper is often secretive when first introduced and may spend much of its time resting beneath overhangs or inside caves.
Once established, it usually becomes more confident and may emerge readily at feeding time.
It is primarily an ambush predator and relies on cover before making short, rapid strikes at suitable prey.
Reef Safe:
With Caution
The Soapy Grouper does not normally damage healthy coral tissue.
However, small fish, shrimp, crabs and other suitably sized mobile invertebrates may be eaten.
It is therefore best considered reef safe with caution.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a large, mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration and strong oxygenation.
Tankmates should be chosen according to mouth size rather than body length alone, as surprisingly large prey may be swallowed.
Avoid keeping with small ornamental fish or crustaceans where their safety is a priority.
Provide several secure caves and shaded retreat areas.
This species is a soapfish and can produce defensive skin secretions when severely stressed. Good husbandry, careful handling and minimising unnecessary disturbance are therefore particularly important.
Strong filtration and regular maintenance are recommended due to the waste produced by a carnivorous diet.
Suitable for:
Experienced
