The Snow White Guppy, Poecilia reticulata, is a striking selectively bred livebearer recognised by its clean white to pearlescent body colour, pale fins and elegant ornamental appearance. Some individuals may show subtle platinum, cream or iridescent tones depending on lighting and breeding line. Like other fancy Guppies, the Snow White Guppy is active, sociable and easy to feed, making it an attractive addition to peaceful planted community aquariums. Its straightforward livebearing reproduction and adaptable nature make it suitable for beginner and experienced freshwater fishkeepers alike.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Snow White Guppy is a selectively bred ornamental strain and does not occur naturally in this colour form.

Wild Poecilia reticulata originate from northern South America and nearby Caribbean regions, including Venezuela, Trinidad, Barbados, northern Brazil and the Guianas. They inhabit a wide variety of warm freshwater environments including streams, springs, ponds, canals, vegetated ditches and slow-moving waterways.

Temperament:
Very peaceful, active and social. Snow White Guppies are well suited to calm freshwater community aquariums and generally coexist readily with other small non-aggressive fish.

Males frequently display towards females and may chase one another during courtship or social interactions. When maintaining mixed-sex groups, keeping approximately one male to every two or three females helps reduce persistent attention towards individual females.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Wild Guppies consume zooplankton, small insects, detritus, algae and other fine organic material.

In the aquarium, offer high-quality tropical flakes or micro-pellets as the staple diet, supplemented with spirulina and other vegetable-rich foods.

Provide frozen or live Artemia, daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae and suitably sized bloodworms for additional protein and variety. Feed small portions once or twice daily.

Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum aquarium volume of approximately 60 litres is recommended for a small group, with planted areas, gentle to moderate water movement and sufficient open swimming space.

Larger aquariums are preferable for breeding colonies or when maintaining several mature males.

Behaviour & Activity:
An active livebearer that spends most of its time swimming through the middle and upper areas of the aquarium.

Males are generally smaller and more decorative, while females develop a deeper body profile and are usually larger when fully grown. The intensity of the Snow White colouration can vary between individual fish, with some showing a clean opaque white appearance and others developing pearlescent or platinum tones.

Guppies are livebearers. Females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs and may produce repeated broods following a successful mating.

Females can store sperm and may produce several successive broods without further contact with a male. Newly born fry immediately seek dense vegetation and sheltered areas where they begin feeding on microscopic foods.

Snow White Guppies are ideal for peaceful freshwater community aquariums containing other small species with similar water requirements.

Suitable companions include Platies, peaceful Mollies, Swordtails, small Rainbowfish, Corydoras, peaceful Rasboras and other gentle community fish.

Avoid aggressive or persistent fin-nipping species, particularly when maintaining males with extended ornamental fins.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Maintain moderately hard, mineral-rich water and avoid prolonged exposure to very soft or strongly acidic conditions. Stable parameters are more important than attempting to achieve one exact value.

Provide a mixture of open swimming room and planted areas. Fine-leaved plants, mosses and floating vegetation provide useful shelter for females and newly born fry.

Maintain clean water through efficient biological filtration and regular partial water changes. Guppies can tolerate a relatively broad range of conditions but perform best when water chemistry remains stable.

Avoid excessive current, particularly with heavily finned ornamental males. Gentle to moderate circulation allows natural swimming without causing unnecessary fatigue.

If keeping males and females together, maintain approximately one male for every two or three females to distribute courtship attention.

Adult Guppies may consume newly born fry. Dense moss, floating plants and other fine cover can improve natural survival, or fry can be transferred to a dedicated rearing aquarium.

Feed fry newly hatched Artemia, microworms, powdered fry foods and finely crushed flakes several times daily in very small portions.

Different Guppy strains readily interbreed. Keep the Snow White strain separate from other colour varieties if maintaining consistent white colouration and strain characteristics is important.

Pale-bodied Guppies can make redness, damaged fins or external marks particularly noticeable, so inspect new fish carefully for clear eyes, intact fins, smooth scales and normal swimming behaviour.

A secure aquarium cover is recommended because Guppies can jump, particularly when startled or during energetic courtship.
