Description

Snow White Bristlenose (Ancistrus temminckii)

The Snow White Bristlenose is a striking captive-bred bristlenose pleco admired for its pale white colouration, compact adult size and useful grazing behaviour. This peaceful suckermouth catfish is well suited to mature tropical community aquariums, planted tanks and aquascapes where wood, caves and stable water quality are provided. Unlike common plecos, bristlenose plecos stay much smaller, making them a far better choice for many home aquariums.

Common Name:
Snow White Bristlenose, Snow White Bristlenose Pleco, White Bristlenose Pleco, Snow White Ancistrus

Scientific Name (Latin):
Ancistrus temminckii

Strain / Form:
Snow White captive-bred bristlenose form

Maximum Size:
Approximately 10–12 cm

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Wild Ancistrus species are South American loricariid catfish associated with streams, rivers, submerged wood, roots, rocks and sheltered areas.

The Snow White Bristlenose is a captive-bred aquarium form rather than a wild colour form.

In the aquarium, it does best in a mature setup with driftwood, caves, shaded areas, smooth rockwork and clean, well-filtered water.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–27°C
pH Range: 6.5–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Oxygenation: Good oxygenation and filtration recommended

Temperament:
Peaceful

Snow White Bristlenose Plecos are generally peaceful and suitable for community aquariums.

Mature males may become territorial around caves, especially with other male bristlenose plecos, but serious aggression is usually limited when enough hiding places and space are provided.

They are best kept with calm community fish that will not harass them or outcompete them heavily for sinking foods.

Diet:
Omnivore / Algae & Biofilm Grazer

The Snow White Bristlenose naturally grazes biofilm, soft algae, plant matter and fine organic material.

Offer quality sinking algae wafers, spirulina foods, pleco tablets, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach and other suitable vegetables.

Occasional protein foods such as sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm or brineshrimp can be offered, but the diet should not be too rich in meaty foods.

Driftwood is strongly recommended, as bristlenose plecos graze wood surfaces and benefit from the natural biofilm it supports.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 80–100 litres for a single adult

Larger aquariums are recommended for pairs, groups or community setups.

Provide caves and hiding places, especially if keeping more than one bristlenose.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Snow White Bristlenose spends much of its time attached to wood, glass, rockwork and aquarium décor.

It is often more active during quieter periods, in the evening or when food is added.

Settled individuals may become visible during the day, especially in peaceful aquariums with shaded retreats.

Mature males may develop bristles around the snout and will often claim caves as territories.

Community Suitability:
Peaceful Community Fish

The Snow White Bristlenose is suitable for peaceful tropical community aquariums.

Suitable tankmates include tetras, rasboras, danios, peaceful barbs, livebearers, corydoras, rainbowfish, dwarf cichlids with care, gourami with care, shrimp with caution and other calm community species.

Avoid large aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping fish, predatory fish and overly boisterous bottom dwellers that may harass the pleco or prevent it from feeding.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Keep in a mature aquarium with stable water quality and good filtration.

Provide driftwood, caves, smooth rockwork and shaded areas.

Do not rely on algae alone. Bristlenose plecos need regular sinking foods and vegetables to stay in good condition.

Avoid sharp décor that may damage the body or fins.

Make sure sinking foods reach the bottom, especially in busy community aquariums.

Keep nitrate low and maintain clean substrate, as plecos can suffer in poorly maintained tanks.

If breeding, provide suitable caves. Males guard the eggs and young inside the cave.

Snow White and pale bristlenose forms can appear more sensitive to poor water quality because marks, stress and damage are easier to see on the body.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate
