Description

The black and yellow lined soapfish, also known as the Barred Soapfish or Yellow Emperor Snapper, requires a large, well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places. These fish are generally yellow with black stripes, including one through the eye and another mid-body stripe. They are known to consume any fish or invertebrate they can fit in their mouths, but generally avoid corals. They can also release a toxin when stressed or threatened, which can resemble soap.

Aquarium Size: A minimum of 100 gallons is recommended due to their potential size (up to 10 inches).

Aquascaping: Provide ample hiding places like caves, overhangs, and ledges using rocks and driftwood.

Tank Mates: They are generally peaceful but should be housed with larger, peaceful tank mates and only one per aquarium, according to Quality Marine. Avoid keeping them with smaller fish or invertebrates that they could eat.

Diet: A diet rich in meaty foods is crucial. They may be hesitant to accept prepared foods initially, so try live foods like enriched brine shrimp, glass/grass shrimp, or black worms to encourage feeding.

Water Quality: Soapfish can be messy, so ensure your filtration system can handle the waste they produce. They also have a lower metabolism and may only need to be fed every other day

Behaviour: Soapfish are shy and may hide, especially when first introduced to an aquarium. They will become more active when food is presented.
