Salt & Pepper Platy – Xiphophorus maculatus

The Salt & Pepper Platy is an attractive freshwater livebearer admired for its distinctive speckled colouration, contrasting dark markings and lively swimming behaviour. This selectively bred variety of Xiphophorus maculatus brings character and movement to peaceful tropical community aquariums, planted displays and mixed livebearer setups. Hardy, sociable and easy to care for, Salt & Pepper Platies are particularly suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists looking for a colourful, active community fish.

Common Name: Salt & Pepper Platy, Salt and Pepper Platy, Speckled Platy, Calico Platy

Scientific Name (Latin): Xiphophorus maculatus

Strain / Form: Salt & Pepper captive-bred colour and pattern variety

Maximum Size: Approximately 5–6 cm

Water Type: Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat: Wild Xiphophorus maculatus originate from Central America, including Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua.

In their natural habitat, Platies inhabit slow-moving streams, rivers, ponds, canals and vegetated freshwater margins.

These environments commonly provide aquatic vegetation, gentle water movement and mineral-rich water.

The Salt & Pepper Platy is a selectively bred aquarium variety rather than a naturally occurring wild colour form.

In the aquarium, it thrives in mature planted environments with open swimming areas, gentle to moderate water movement and stable, alkaline water conditions.

Water Parameters: Temperature: 20–26°C pH Range: 7.0–8.2 Hardness: Moderately hard to hard preferred (approximately 10–30 dGH) Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: Kept low and stable Flow: Gentle to moderate preferred

Temperament: Peaceful / Active

Salt & Pepper Platies are peaceful, sociable fish that are well suited to community aquariums.

They enjoy swimming in small groups and are generally compatible with other peaceful freshwater species.

Males may occasionally chase females during breeding behaviour, so mixed groups should contain more females than males.

Their gentle nature makes them suitable for a wide variety of community setups, provided tankmates share similar water requirements.

Diet: Omnivore / Livebearer Community Diet

Salt & Pepper Platies readily accept a varied diet of appropriately sized aquarium foods.

Offer high-quality tropical flakes, small pellets, livebearer foods and spirulina-based flakes as their staple diet.

Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, bloodworm and mosquito larvae.

Vegetable matter is an important part of their diet, and regular feeding with algae-based foods helps support digestion, colouration and overall condition.

Minimum Tank Size: Approximately 60 litres for a small group

A larger aquarium is recommended for bigger groups, mixed livebearer communities or aquariums containing several males.

Provide sufficient swimming space alongside live plants and sheltered areas where fish can retreat when needed.

Behaviour & Activity: The Salt & Pepper Platy is an active, confident fish that spends much of its time swimming through the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.

Its attractive speckled pattern makes it particularly eye-catching against green aquatic plants.

Individual fish may display different combinations of black, white, cream, red or orange markings depending on the breeding line.

Like other Platies, this species is a livebearer, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.

In well-planted aquariums, some fry may survive among dense vegetation and floating plants.

Community Suitability: Peaceful Community Fish

The Salt & Pepper Platy is an excellent addition to peaceful tropical community aquariums.

Suitable tankmates include other Platies, guppies, mollies, swordtails, peaceful danios, compatible rasboras, rainbowfish, corydoras, bristlenose plecos and other calm community species that tolerate similar water conditions.

Avoid aggressive fish, fin-nippers, large predatory species and specialist soft-water fish that require acidic conditions.

Special Requirements or Care Notes: Keep Salt & Pepper Platies in a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and good filtration.

They prefer moderately hard to hard, alkaline water and should not be maintained long term in very soft, acidic conditions.

A small group is recommended, with approximately one male to two or three females where mixed sexes are kept.

Provide live plants, floating vegetation and open swimming areas to encourage natural behaviour and allow females to avoid unwanted attention.

These fish breed readily, so aquarists should be prepared for the possibility of fry when males and females are kept together.

Dense plants, aquarium moss and floating vegetation can provide shelter for young fish.

Salt & Pepper Platies may crossbreed with other Platy colour varieties, so keep breeding strains separate if maintaining specific markings and colouration is important.

Individual fish may vary in the density, position and intensity of their speckled markings, which is a natural feature of selectively bred colour strains.

Regular water changes, appropriate stocking and a varied diet will help maintain their colouration and long-term health.
