The Sailfin Tang is a striking and highly recognisable marine surgeonfish, admired for its tall dorsal and anal fins, bold vertical banding and impressive disc-like profile when fully extended. Juveniles are especially attractive, while adults develop a larger, deeper-bodied appearance with strong brown, cream and yellow patterning. Hardy once established but capable of reaching a substantial adult size, this species requires a spacious, mature marine aquarium with extensive swimming room and regular access to marine algae.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Sailfin Tang occurs across tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is associated with lagoons, coral reefs, reef flats and sheltered coastal areas.

It typically inhabits areas with abundant rock and coral structure where it can graze continuously on algae while remaining close to shelter.

The Sailfin Tang is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish but can become territorial towards other tangs, particularly similarly shaped Zebrasoma species.

It is usually best kept as the only Sailfin or closely related tang unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and introductions are carefully planned.

Diet:
Herbivore / Algae Grazer

The Sailfin Tang naturally spends much of its time grazing algae and plant-based material from reef surfaces.

In the aquarium, provide regular access to dried nori, marine algae sheets, spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets and marine flakes.

Frozen mysis and other marine foods can be offered as part of a varied diet, but marine algae should remain an important part of its long-term feeding routine.

Its large adult size, deep body and active swimming behaviour mean the Sailfin Tang requires extensive horizontal swimming space and substantial aquarium volume.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Sailfin Tang is an active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time cruising through the aquarium and grazing across rockwork.

When displaying or threatened, it can fully extend its large dorsal and anal fins, dramatically increasing its apparent size.

Provide broad open swimming areas together with mature rockwork, caves and sheltered retreat spaces.

Strong circulation and excellent oxygenation are beneficial for this active surgeonfish.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe

The Sailfin Tang is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.

Its natural grazing behaviour can also help control nuisance algae in suitably sized reef aquariums.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a large, mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and substantial open swimming space.

Regular access to marine algae is essential, even where natural grazing is available.

Like other surgeonfish, the Sailfin Tang possesses sharp defensive spines near the base of the tail. Care should therefore be taken during handling and aquarium maintenance.

Avoid keeping it with highly aggressive tankmates or multiple similarly shaped Zebrasoma tangs unless the aquarium provides exceptional space.

Surgeonfish can be susceptible to external parasites and transport-related stress, so careful acclimation, quarantine and consistently stable water chemistry are strongly recommended.

This species grows considerably larger than its juvenile appearance may suggest, so its long-term adult requirements should be considered before purchase.
