Red Wag Platy – Xiphophorus maculatus

The Red Wag Platy is a colourful freshwater livebearer admired for its vibrant red-orange body, contrasting black fins and lively swimming behaviour. Also known as the Red Wagtail Platy, this attractive captive-bred variety of Xiphophorus maculatus is an excellent choice for peaceful tropical community aquariums, planted displays and mixed livebearer setups. Hardy, sociable and easy to care for, it is particularly popular with beginner and experienced aquarists alike.

Common Name: Red Wag Platy, Red Wagtail Platy, Red and Black Platy, Wagtail Platy

Scientific Name (Latin): Xiphophorus maculatus

Strain / Form: Red Wag / Red Wagtail captive-bred colour variety

Maximum Size: Approximately 5–6 cm

Water Type: Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat: Wild Xiphophorus maculatus originate from Central America, including Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua.

In their natural habitat, platies inhabit slow-moving streams, rivers, ponds, canals and vegetated freshwater margins.

The Red Wag Platy is a selectively bred aquarium variety rather than a naturally occurring wild colour form.

In the aquarium, it thrives in mature planted environments with open swimming areas, gentle water movement and stable, mineral-rich water.

Water Parameters: Temperature: 20–26°C pH Range: 7.0–8.2 Hardness: Moderately hard to hard preferred (approximately 10–30 dGH) Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: Kept low and stable Flow: Gentle to moderate preferred

Temperament: Peaceful / Active

Red Wag Platies are peaceful, sociable fish that are well suited to community aquariums.

They enjoy swimming in small groups and are generally compatible with other peaceful freshwater fish.

Males may occasionally chase females during breeding behaviour, so mixed groups should contain more females than males.

Diet: Omnivore / Livebearer Community Diet

Red Wag Platies readily accept a wide variety of aquarium foods.

Offer high-quality tropical flakes, small pellets, livebearer foods and spirulina-based flakes as their staple diet.

Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, bloodworm and mosquito larvae.

Vegetable matter is an important part of their diet, and regular feeding with algae-based foods helps support digestion, colour and overall health.

Minimum Tank Size: Approximately 60 litres for a small group

A larger aquarium is recommended for bigger groups or mixed livebearer communities.

Provide plenty of swimming space alongside live plants and sheltered areas where fish can retreat when needed.

Behaviour & Activity: The Red Wag Platy is an active, confident fish that spends much of its time exploring the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.

Its contrasting red body and black fins make it particularly attractive against green aquarium plants.

Like other platies, this species is a livebearer, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.

In well-planted aquariums, some fry may survive among dense vegetation and floating plants.

Community Suitability: Peaceful Community Fish

The Red Wag Platy is an excellent addition to peaceful tropical community aquariums.

Suitable tankmates include other platies, guppies, mollies, swordtails, peaceful danios, compatible rasboras, rainbowfish, corydoras, bristlenose plecos and other calm species that tolerate similar water conditions.

Avoid aggressive fish, fin-nippers, large predators and specialist soft-water species that require acidic conditions.

Special Requirements or Care Notes: Keep Red Wag Platies in a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and good filtration.

They prefer moderately hard to hard, alkaline water and may struggle in very soft, acidic conditions.

A small group is recommended, with one male to two or three females where mixed sexes are kept.

Provide live plants, floating cover and open swimming areas to encourage natural activity.

These fish breed readily, so aquarists should be prepared for the possibility of fry if males and females are kept together.

Dense plants and floating vegetation can provide shelter for young fish.

Red Wag Platies may crossbreed with other platy colour varieties, so keep breeding lines separate if maintaining specific markings is important.

Regular water changes and a varied diet will help maintain their vibrant colouration and long-term health.
