Princess Parrot Wrasse - Scarus bowersi

Princess Parrot Wrasse (Scarus bowersi)

The Princess Parrot Wrasse is a striking and highly active marine fish recognised for its vivid colouration, powerful swimming style and characteristic parrotfish body shape. As it matures, its colours can become increasingly intense and its grazing behaviour more pronounced. This species is best suited to very large, mature marine aquariums with extensive rockwork, strong filtration and plenty of open swimming space.

Common Name:
Princess Parrot Wrasse

Scientific Name (Latin):
Scarus bowersi

Maximum Size:
Approximately 35–40 cm

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Princess Parrot Wrasse is associated with tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments, including coral-rich reef slopes, lagoons and areas containing substantial rockwork.

It spends much of its day actively swimming across the reef and grazing on algae and material growing over hard surfaces.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

Temperament:
Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive

The Princess Parrot Wrasse is generally not highly aggressive towards unrelated fish but can be boisterous due to its size and constant activity.

It is best kept with confident, appropriately sized marine fish that can tolerate its energetic swimming and feeding behaviour.

Diet:
Herbivore / Omnivorous Grazer

The Princess Parrot Wrasse naturally spends much of its time grazing algae, biofilm and organic material from reef surfaces.

In the aquarium, provide a varied diet containing marine algae, nori, spirulina-based foods and high-quality marine pellets.

Supplementary meaty foods such as mysis and finely chopped marine foods can also be offered as part of a balanced diet.

Frequent feeding and access to mature rockwork for grazing are beneficial.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 800 litres

A very large aquarium with extensive horizontal swimming space is required due to its adult size and active nature.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Princess Parrot Wrasse is a highly active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time grazing and exploring rockwork.

Its powerful jaws are adapted for scraping and biting material from hard reef surfaces.

Provide substantial open swimming space alongside large areas of mature rockwork for natural grazing.

Rockwork should be positioned securely, as larger individuals are powerful and active around the aquascape.

Reef Safe:
With Caution

The Princess Parrot Wrasse should be considered reef safe with caution.

Although its primary interest is grazing algae and material from reef surfaces, its feeding activity can disturb or damage encrusting organisms and delicate coral growth.

Its size and powerful grazing behaviour also make it unsuitable for many conventional mixed reef aquariums.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species should only be purchased with its substantial adult size and long-term aquarium requirements fully considered.

Provide a very large, mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and extensive open swimming space.

Mature rockwork is important for natural grazing behaviour.

A varied diet with a strong algae and vegetable component should be offered regularly.

Rock structures should be secure and capable of withstanding an active, powerful fish.

Avoid very small or timid tankmates that may be intimidated by its size and constant movement.

Stable water conditions and consistently high water quality are essential for long-term success.
