The Powder Brown Tang is a striking and active marine surgeonfish recognised for its deep brown to black body, contrasting white facial markings, yellow dorsal highlights and bright blue edging to the fins. Constantly on the move and highly attractive in a mature reef aquarium, it requires excellent water quality, strong oxygenation and substantial swimming space. Like many Acanthurus tangs, it can be sensitive to transport stress and external parasites, so it is best suited to intermediate or experienced marine aquarists.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Powder Brown Tang occurs throughout the Indo-Pacific and is associated with coral-rich outer reef slopes, reef flats and clear coastal reef environments.

It is typically found in areas with strong water movement and abundant hard surfaces supporting algae growth, where it spends much of the day grazing.

The Powder Brown Tang is generally peaceful towards unrelated reef fish but can become territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly similarly shaped Acanthurus species.

It is usually best maintained as the only Acanthurus tang unless the aquarium is very large and introductions are carefully managed.

Diet:
Herbivore / Algae Grazer

The Powder Brown Tang naturally spends much of its time grazing algae from reef surfaces.

In the aquarium, provide regular access to dried nori, marine algae sheets, spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets and marine flakes.

A varied diet can also include occasional frozen mysis and other marine foods, but plant-based foods should form the foundation of its long-term diet.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 400 litres

This is an active swimmer that requires substantial horizontal swimming space together with mature rockwork for grazing and shelter.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Powder Brown Tang is a highly active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time cruising through open water and grazing across live rock.

Provide extensive open swimming areas together with secure rockwork and sheltered spaces where the fish can retreat when required.

Strong circulation and good oxygenation are particularly important for this species.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe

The Powder Brown Tang is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.

Its algae-grazing behaviour can make it particularly useful in mature reef aquariums.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
A mature marine aquarium with excellent water quality and established live rock is strongly recommended.

Like other Acanthurus tangs, this species can be sensitive to transport stress and is prone to external parasites such as marine white spot.

Careful acclimation, quarantine and close observation during the first weeks are strongly recommended.

Provide regular marine algae even where natural grazing is available, as constant access to plant-based foods helps maintain body condition.

Avoid highly aggressive tankmates and excessive competition from other tangs.

Like other surgeonfish, the Powder Brown Tang possesses sharp defensive spines near the base of the tail, so care should be taken during handling and aquarium maintenance.
