Description

Pitbull Pleco LDA25 (Parotocinclus jumbo)

The Pitbull Pleco LDA25, Parotocinclus jumbo, is a small, peaceful suckermouth catfish with a broad flattened head, compact armoured body and attractive mottled brown patterning. Also known as the Goby Pleco or Pitbull Plec, this species is popular because it stays much smaller than most plecos and works well in mature planted community aquariums. It is a sociable grazing catfish rather than a single “tank cleaner”, so it should be kept in a group with soft sand, driftwood, smooth stones, natural biofilm and regular supplementary feeding.

Common Name:
Pitbull Pleco LDA25, Pitbull Plec, LDA025, Goby Pleco, Pitbull Catfish.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Parotocinclus jumbo
Often traded as Parotocinclus sp. LDA25 or LDA025.

Maximum Size:
Usually around 5–6 cm.

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Native to Brazil. This small loricariid is associated with freshwater habitats where it grazes biofilm, algae and fine food particles from sand, stones, wood and other submerged surfaces. Aquarium references describe LDA25 as a Brazilian species that does best in mature aquariums with soft substrate, cover, plants, driftwood and smooth rocks.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH Range: 6.4–7.5
Hardness or Salinity: Soft to moderately hard freshwater; stable, clean and well-oxygenated water is important.

Temperament:
Peaceful and sociable. Pitbull Plecos are suitable for calm community aquariums and should ideally be kept in groups of 5 or more. They are not aggressive towards other fish, but can be outcompeted by large, boisterous bottom feeders or very fast-feeding tank mates.

Diet:
Aufwuchs, algae and biofilm grazer with omnivorous elements. Provide algae wafers, spirulina tablets, sinking pleco foods, Repashy-style gel foods, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach and occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops or brineshrimp. Do not rely on aquarium algae alone, as most tanks cannot provide enough food long term.

Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 70 litres is recommended for a group, with larger aquariums preferred for community setups. A longer footprint with soft sand, smooth stones, wood and grazing surfaces is more useful than extra height.

Behaviour & Activity:
A peaceful bottom and surface-grazing catfish that spends much of its time resting on sand, clinging to stones, grazing wood or moving around the lower levels of the aquarium. It may bury or shuffle into soft sand when startled, so sharp gravel should be avoided. In a settled group, individuals are more confident and can often be seen grazing openly during the day.

Aquarium Category:
Community Fish
Suitable with peaceful tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, small barbs, livebearers, peaceful dwarf cichlids with care, Corydoras-type catfish, small gouramis, snails and other calm community fish. Avoid aggressive cichlids, large predators, rough bottom-dwellers, fin-nippers and tank mates that may dominate feeding or disturb them constantly.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Keep in a mature aquarium with soft sand, driftwood, smooth rocks, shaded retreats and stable water quality. This species benefits from established biofilm and should not be added to brand-new tanks. Provide good oxygenation, regular water changes and a varied sinking diet. It is smaller and gentler than many plecos, so check that each fish has a rounded belly and is feeding properly. Plants are usually safe, and planted aquariums suit this species very well.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate fishkeepers

Availability:
Occasional in trade / Specialist import or captive-bred where relevant
