Pearlscale Butterfly - Pacific - West Pacific, north to southern Japan, ranging in the west to Sunda Strait and may overlap in Sumatra with Chaetodon madagaskarensis, while in the east it is replaced by C.mertensii on the east coast of Papua New Guinea. Hybrid can be expected in those regions. Clear coastal to outer reef slopes and drop-offs. Usually in rich invertebrate reefs at depths of about 20m. Adults usually in pairs. Juveniles solitary. Posterior part of body and tail orange-yellow. Body pearly white with a network of grey lines, the thinker ones forming a chevron pattern. Length to 12cm.
