The Orange Shoulder Tang is a striking and active marine surgeonfish recognised for its sleek body shape and distinctive orange marking behind the pectoral fin, which becomes increasingly prominent as the fish matures. Juveniles are much more yellow in appearance, while adults develop deeper grey to olive tones with stronger contrast across the body. Reef safe and highly active, this species is best suited to large, mature marine aquariums with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and plenty of open swimming space.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Orange Shoulder Tang occurs across tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is associated with lagoons, reef flats, seaward reef slopes and areas containing abundant rockwork and algae growth.

It spends much of the day grazing across reef surfaces while moving between open water and areas of shelter.

The Orange Shoulder Tang is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish but can become territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly similarly shaped Acanthurus species.

It is usually best maintained as the only similar large tang unless the aquarium is exceptionally spacious and introductions are carefully planned.

Diet:
Herbivore / Algae Grazer

The Orange Shoulder Tang naturally spends much of its time grazing algae and plant-based material from reef surfaces.

In the aquarium, provide regular access to dried nori, marine algae sheets, spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets and marine flakes.

Frozen mysis and other marine foods can also be included as part of a varied diet, but vegetable-based foods should remain an important part of long-term care.

Its substantial adult size and highly active swimming behaviour mean the Orange Shoulder Tang requires considerable horizontal swimming space.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Orange Shoulder Tang is an energetic daytime swimmer that spends much of its time cruising through open water and grazing across rockwork.

Juveniles and adults differ significantly in appearance, with the characteristic orange shoulder marking developing more strongly as the fish matures.

Provide broad open swimming areas together with secure rockwork, caves and sheltered retreat spaces.

Strong circulation and excellent oxygenation are particularly beneficial for this active surgeonfish.

Reef Safe:

The Orange Shoulder Tang is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.

Its natural algae-grazing behaviour can also make it useful in large reef aquariums with sufficient mature rockwork.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a large, mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and extensive open swimming space.

Regular access to marine algae is essential even where natural grazing is available.

Like other surgeonfish, the Orange Shoulder Tang possesses sharp defensive spines near the base of the tail, so care should be taken during handling and aquarium maintenance.

Avoid keeping it with highly aggressive tankmates or multiple similarly shaped Acanthurus tangs unless the aquarium provides exceptional space.

Surgeonfish can be susceptible to external parasites and transport-related stress, so careful acclimation, quarantine and stable water chemistry are strongly recommended.

Its considerable adult size and long-term swimming requirements should be fully considered before purchase.
