Nitrite forms during the biological filtration process as beneficial bacteria break down toxic ammonia. While less toxic than ammonia, nitrite can still seriously affect fish health and must always remain at 0 mg/l (ppm).

Regular testing ensures your filtration system is working effectively and helps prevent long-term stress or illness in fish.

If Nitrite Is Detected

Aquariums:

• At 0.25–0.5 mg/l (ppm): add a biological filter booster

• At 1 mg/l: perform a 25% water change

• Above this level: perform a 50% water change

• Use ammonia-removal media in the filter to reduce nitrogen waste

• Check pH and ammonia levels to ensure full water balance

Ponds:

• At 0.25–0.5 mg/l (ppm): add a filter bacteria booster

• At 1 mg/l: change 25% of water volume

• Higher levels: change 50% of water volume

• Use ammonia-absorbing media in filtration

• Test pH and ammonia alongside nitrite

How to Use:

1. Rinse the test tube and fill with 5 ml of water.

2. Add 5 drops of Nitrite reagent.

3. Cap and shake thoroughly.

4. Wait 2 minutes, then compare with the color chart.

   • Colorless = 0 nitrite

   • Any pink tint indicates nitrite presence

   • Ignore any colour changes after 2 minutes
