Description

Neon Yellow Rasbora (Microdevario kubotai)

The Neon Yellow Rasbora is a tiny, peaceful freshwater shoaling fish admired for its glowing yellow-green body colour, delicate size and lively group behaviour. Also known as the Green Neon Rasbora, Yellow Neon Rasbora or Kubotai Rasbora, this species is ideal for mature planted aquariums, nano-style community setups and peaceful aquascapes. It is best kept in a group, where its colour, confidence and natural swimming behaviour are shown at their best.

Common Name:
Neon Yellow Rasbora, Green Neon Rasbora, Yellow Neon Rasbora, Kubotai Rasbora, Kubotai’s Microrasbora

Scientific Name (Latin):
Microdevario kubotai

Maximum Size:
Approximately 2 cm

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Neon Yellow Rasbora is found in Southeast Asia, including parts of Thailand and southern Myanmar.

In the wild, it is associated with calm to moderately flowing clear waters, small streams, tributaries and well-oxygenated freshwater habitats with plant cover and sheltered margins.

In the aquarium, it does best in a mature planted setup with open swimming space, fine-leaved plants, floating cover and gentle to moderate water movement.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–27°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Flow: Gentle to moderate preferred

Temperament:
Peaceful

Neon Yellow Rasboras are peaceful shoaling fish and should be kept with small, calm tankmates.

They are best kept in groups, where they become more confident, display stronger colour and show more natural midwater swimming behaviour.

Diet:
Omnivore / Micro-predator

The Neon Yellow Rasbora naturally feeds on tiny invertebrates, zooplankton, insect larvae and fine food particles.

Offer high-quality micro pellets, finely crushed tropical flakes and small frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, baby brineshrimp and finely chopped bloodworm.

Because of their small mouths, all foods should be appropriately sized.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 45–60 litres for a small group

A mature planted aquarium with stable water quality is strongly recommended.

Larger aquariums are preferred for bigger groups or mixed peaceful communities, as they provide more swimming space and greater stability.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Neon Yellow Rasbora is an active midwater shoaling fish that looks best when kept in a proper group.

A settled group will swim together through open areas, then retreat among plants or shaded cover if startled.

Their yellow-green glow becomes more noticeable under good lighting, against darker planting and when the fish are settled and well fed.

Community Suitability:
Peaceful Community Fish

The Neon Yellow Rasbora is ideal for peaceful planted aquariums and nano community setups.

Suitable tankmates include small rasboras, ember tetras, small peaceful tetras, dwarf pencilfish, small corydoras, otocinclus, peaceful shrimp with caution and small peaceful gouramis with care.

Avoid large fish, aggressive species, fin-nippers, boisterous barbs, predatory fish and any tankmate large enough to swallow them.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Keep this species in a group of at least 8, with 10 or more preferred where space allows.

A mature planted aquarium with stable water quality, gentle flow and areas of cover will help reduce stress and bring out stronger colour.

Avoid bright, bare aquariums, unstable new setups and aggressive tankmates.

Because they are very small, make sure they are not outcompeted at feeding time.

Use small foods and feed carefully so all fish get enough to eat.

Regular small water changes and stable conditions are recommended for long-term success.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate

Availability:
Common to occasional, depending on season and supplier.
