Description

Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox)

The Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish is a beautiful small rainbowfish, loved for its bright metallic blue body, active swimming behaviour and colourful red to orange fins in mature males. Also known as the Praecox Rainbowfish or Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, this species offers classic rainbowfish colour and movement in a more manageable size than many larger Melanotaenia species. It is peaceful, lively and best suited to a mature planted community aquarium with open swimming space, clean water and a proper group of its own kind.

Common Name:
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish. Also commonly referred to as the Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, Neon Rainbowfish, Praecox Rainbowfish, Diamond Rainbowfish or Peacock Rainbowfish.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Melanotaenia praecox

Maximum Size:
Around 5–6 cm in captivity, with males usually becoming deeper-bodied and more colourful than females.

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Native to northern West Papua, Indonesia, where it is associated with the Mamberamo River system. In the wild, it is found in tropical freshwater habitats, including tributaries and slower-moving sections with vegetation, cover and open swimming areas. Most specimens available in the aquarium trade are captive-bred.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH Range: 6.0–8.0
Hardness: soft to moderately hard water, with good adaptability if conditions remain stable

Temperament:
Peaceful and active. It is suitable for community aquariums with other calm but confident fish that will not bully it or be stressed by its constant swimming activity. Males may display to each other, but this is usually harmless when kept in a proper group.

Diet:
Omnivorous. It should be offered a varied diet including quality fine flake, small pellets, micro granules, colour-enhancing foods, frozen daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, bloodworm, mosquito larvae and occasional live foods. A varied diet helps support strong blue body colour, red fin colour and natural display behaviour.

Minimum Tank Size:
A practical recommendation is at least 100–120 litres for a proper group, with an 80 cm aquarium or larger preferred due to its active swimming behaviour.

Behaviour & Activity:
This is an active mid-to-upper level shoaling fish that should be kept in a group of at least 6, ideally 8–10 or more. Males show their best colour when kept with females and rival males, especially in a mature aquarium with planted sides, open swimming space and stable water quality. Like many rainbowfish, they can jump when startled, so a secure lid is recommended.

Aquarium Category:
Community Fish
This species is peaceful and works well with other small-to-medium community fish that enjoy similar tropical conditions. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful rainbowfish, rasboras, tetras, danios, Corydoras, small plecos, peaceful barbs and calm dwarf cichlids. Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin nippers, large predators, very shy nano species and fish that may be stressed by fast-moving tank mates.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a mature, well-filtered aquarium with clean water, good oxygenation and regular maintenance. Planted margins, darker substrate and quality lighting can help enhance colour, while the centre of the aquarium should remain open for swimming. This species is generally hardy once settled, but it still benefits from stable water parameters and should not be kept in very small groups.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate fishkeepers

Availability:
Common / occasional in trade, usually as captive-bred stock
