Mitratus Butterfly - Western Indian Ocean, from Madagascar to the Maldives, and separate populations in Cocos Keeling Atoll and Christmas Island region that are considerably different in colour. Typically found along deep outer reef walls, usually over 40m depth. Occurs singly in pairs, rarely seen in small groups but, in general, observations have been limited because of their depth preference, occurring to at least 80m, They feed on a variety of small invertebrates, zooplankton and algae. A beautifully marked species, readily identified by the two oblique black bands and yellow colouration. Length to 12cm,

The Mitratus butterfly is a wonderful addition to any Fish
only tank. As a carnivore that will feed on small invertebrates, it is not
advised as a reef-safe fish. It will thrive and show it’s magnificent colors on
a larger tank and promptly feeds on Gamma frozen food.
