Description

Mini Snowball Pleco L471 (Hypancistrus sp. L471)

The Mini Snowball Pleco L471 is a beautiful dwarf pleco admired for its dark body, bright white spotting and compact adult size. Also known as the Dwarf Snowball Pleco, White Spotted Dwarf Hypancistrus or L471 Pleco, this species is ideal for mature tropical aquariums with clean, well-oxygenated water, caves and peaceful tankmates. It is smaller than many plecos, but it still needs stable conditions, hiding places and a varied sinking diet.

Common Name:
Mini Snowball Pleco L471, Dwarf Snowball Pleco, White Spotted Dwarf Hypancistrus, L471 Pleco

Scientific Name (Latin):
Hypancistrus sp. L471

L-number / Trade Code:
L471

Maximum Size:
Approximately 6–9 cm

Water Type:
Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Mini Snowball Pleco L471 is associated with South American river habitats, with trade references commonly linking this form to the upper Orinoco region.

In the wild, Hypancistrus plecos are generally found among rocks, crevices, submerged wood and flowing freshwater habitats where they can shelter during the day and forage at night.

In the aquarium, this species does best with caves, smooth rockwork, driftwood, shaded areas and clean, oxygen-rich water.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 25–29°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Oxygenation: Good oxygenation and clean water are important

Temperament:
Peaceful

Mini Snowball Plecos are peaceful and usually suitable for calm tropical community aquariums.

They may be territorial around caves, especially mature males, but serious aggression is usually limited when enough hiding places and feeding areas are provided.

Avoid keeping multiple similar Hypancistrus species together if breeding line purity matters, as hybridisation may be possible.

Diet:
Omnivore / Sinking Food Grazer

The Mini Snowball Pleco is not a true algae-cleaning pleco and should be given a varied sinking diet.

Offer quality sinking pleco tablets, carnivore wafers, small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brineshrimp, daphnia, cyclops, chopped mussel and occasional vegetable-based foods such as courgette or spirulina foods.

Feed after lights out if needed, as this species can be shy and more active in low light.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 75–90 litres for a single specimen or small group

A larger aquarium is recommended for groups, breeding setups or community tanks.

Provide multiple caves and shaded retreats so each fish can choose its own space.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Mini Snowball Pleco L471 is usually shy during the day and more active at night or under subdued lighting.

It spends much of its time resting in caves, under wood or among rockwork, emerging to feed and explore when comfortable.

In a calm mature aquarium, individuals often become more visible at feeding time.

Community Suitability:
Peaceful Community Fish

The Mini Snowball Pleco is suitable for peaceful tropical community aquariums with tankmates that will not harass it or outcompete it heavily for bottom foods.

Suitable tankmates include small to medium peaceful tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras with care, peaceful dwarf cichlids with care, hatchetfish, small rainbowfish and other calm community species.

Avoid large aggressive cichlids, boisterous bottom dwellers, fin-nippers, predatory fish and any fish likely to invade caves or prevent the pleco from feeding.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species needs a mature aquarium with stable water quality, good oxygenation and regular maintenance.

Provide caves, smooth rockwork, driftwood and shaded areas. Ceramic pleco caves are especially useful if keeping groups or attempting breeding.

Make sure sinking foods reach the bottom, especially in community aquariums with faster midwater fish.

Do not rely on algae alone, as L471 plecos need a varied prepared and frozen diet.

Avoid rough handling and sudden water quality changes.

Keep nitrate low and maintain clean substrate, as small plecos can suffer in dirty, poorly maintained aquariums.

If breeding, provide warm clean water, high oxygenation, caves and peaceful conditions.

Suitable for:
Intermediate
