Description
Mexican Turbo Snail (Turbo fluctuosus)
The Mexican Turbo Snail is a large and highly effective marine algae grazer, valued for its ability to consume nuisance algae from rockwork, aquarium glass and other hard surfaces. Its robust shell, strong foot and constant grazing behaviour make it a useful member of the clean-up crew in established reef aquariums. Peaceful and reef safe, this species is best suited to mature systems with stable water quality and a reliable supply of natural algae or supplementary foods.
Common Name:
Mexican Turbo Snail
Scientific Name (Latin):
Turbo fluctuosus
Maximum Size:
Approximately 5–7 cm
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Mexican Turbo Snail originates from rocky coastal and reef environments of the eastern Pacific, where it grazes algae from hard surfaces.
It is naturally adapted to areas containing abundant rockwork and algae-covered surfaces.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Copper: Must be avoided
Temperament:
Peaceful
The Mexican Turbo Snail is completely peaceful and poses no threat to fish, corals or other suitable reef inhabitants.
Its large size and strong movement can occasionally dislodge unsecured coral frags or lightweight decorations.
Diet:
Herbivore / Algae Grazer
The Mexican Turbo Snail feeds primarily on algae growing across rockwork, glass and other hard aquarium surfaces.
It is particularly useful for grazing nuisance film algae and other soft algae growth.
Where natural algae becomes limited, supplement with dried marine algae, nori or suitable algae-based foods.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 50 litres
Aquarium size is less important than the availability of suitable grazing surfaces, stable water chemistry and adequate food.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Mexican Turbo Snail spends much of its time moving across rockwork, glass and aquarium surfaces while grazing continuously.
It may become particularly active during evening and night-time periods.
Because of its substantial shell and strong foot, rockwork and coral frags should be positioned securely.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
The Mexican Turbo Snail is considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals or ornamental invertebrates.
Its strong algae-grazing behaviour makes it particularly useful as part of a reef aquarium clean-up crew.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with established rockwork and natural algae growth.
Monitor food availability carefully, as large Turbo snails can consume considerable amounts of algae and may require supplementary feeding in very clean aquariums.
Stable salinity is particularly important, and careful acclimation is recommended when introducing the snail.
Copper-based medications must be avoided, as copper can be highly toxic to marine invertebrates.
Ensure rockwork and coral frags are secure, as this strong snail may accidentally move loosely positioned items while grazing.
If an individual falls onto its back, check that it can right itself, as some specimens may struggle on smooth or open substrate.
Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate
