Description

Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby (Lentipes mekonggaensis)

Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby is a rare and highly specialised freshwater stream goby admired for its compact size, clinging behaviour and attractive colour potential. Native to Sulawesi, Indonesia, this species is best suited to mature river-style aquariums with clean, well-oxygenated water, strong flow, smooth stones and established biofilm. It is peaceful with suitable tankmates, but it requires specialist care and should not be kept in warm, stagnant or newly set up aquariums.

Common Name:
Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby, Mekongga Stream Goby, Mekonggaensis Goby, Sulawesi Stream Goby

Scientific Name (Latin):
Lentipes mekonggaensis

Maximum Size:
Approximately 4–5 cm

Water Type:
Freshwater / Specialist stream habitat

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby originates from Sulawesi, Indonesia, with the species name linked to the Mekongga mountain area.

It is associated with clear, flowing stream habitats where oxygen levels are high and hard surfaces are available for grazing, resting and clinging.

Like many sicydiine stream gobies, it is likely amphidromous in nature, meaning its natural life cycle may involve larvae developing downstream or in coastal-influenced waters before juveniles return to freshwater streams.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH Range: 6.8–7.8
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Oxygenation: High oxygen and strong water movement required

Temperament:
Peaceful

Mekongga’s Lentipes Gobies are peaceful with suitable fish and are best kept with calm species that enjoy similar clean, flowing water.

Males may display or defend small territories around favourite stones, but serious aggression is unlikely when enough space, flow and grazing surfaces are provided.

Diet:
Omnivore / Biofilm Grazer

Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby naturally grazes biofilm, soft algae, microorganisms and fine food particles from hard surfaces.

Supplement natural grazing with fine sinking pellets, algae-based foods, spirulina foods, biofilm powders, gel foods and tiny frozen foods such as cyclops, daphnia or baby brineshrimp.

Do not rely on aquarium algae alone. A mature aquarium with established biofilm and regular small feeds is strongly recommended.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 60–75 litres for a small group

A longer aquarium with strong flow and plenty of hard grazing surfaces is preferred over a tall aquarium.

Good oxygenation, mature filtration, smooth stones and stable water quality are more important than tank size alone.

Behaviour & Activity:
Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby spends much of its time resting on stones, wood, glass or other hard surfaces.

It may move in short bursts between grazing areas and often chooses areas with steady current and high oxygen levels.

In a mature river-style aquarium, settled individuals may become active and visible during the day, especially when kept in a peaceful group with plenty of cover.

Community Suitability:
Specialist Community Fish

Mekongga’s Lentipes Goby is best kept in a specialist stream aquarium or cool-to-moderate tropical community with fish that enjoy clean, flowing water.

Suitable tankmates include small peaceful danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, small hillstream-suitable rasboras, peaceful gobies from similar habitats and some compatible hillstream loaches where space allows.

Avoid large fish, aggressive species, fin-nippers, slow warm-water fish, discus, angelfish, gourami, puffers, cichlids and any species that requires still, warm or low-oxygen water.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
This species needs clean, mature, oxygen-rich water with strong flow.

A river-style aquarium with smooth stones, rounded pebbles, driftwood, open grazing surfaces and good surface agitation is strongly recommended.

Avoid newly set up aquariums, poor water quality, warm stagnant conditions and sharp substrate.

Maintain low nitrate and avoid sudden changes in water chemistry.

Ask the supplier what conditions the fish has been kept in, especially if salinity or harder water has been used during holding.

Provide mature biofilm growth and supplement the diet with suitably small foods.

Make sure food reaches the lower levels and grazing surfaces, as faster fish may take food before the gobies feed.

A secure lid is recommended, as small stream gobies can jump or climb during stress.

This is a specialist species best suited to aquarists with experience maintaining river-style or hillstream aquariums.

Suitable for:
Intermediate to experienced
