Description
Kuhli Loach – Pangio semicincta
The Kuhli Loach is a fascinating freshwater bottom-dwelling fish admired for its slender, eel-like body, distinctive black and orange bands and peaceful nature. Also known as the Half-Banded Kuhli Loach or Coolie Loach, this unusual species is an excellent addition to mature tropical community aquariums. Naturally shy and most active during quieter periods, Kuhli Loaches thrive in groups where they can explore soft sand, sheltered caves and planted areas together.
Common Name:
Kuhli Loach, Half-Banded Kuhli Loach, Coolie Loach, Striped Kuhli Loach, Malayan Loach
Scientific Name (Latin):
Pangio semicincta
Older / Trade Name:
Acanthophthalmus semicinctus, Pangio semicinctus
Maximum Size:
Approximately 8–10 cm
Water Type:
Freshwater
Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Kuhli Loach originates from Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
In the wild, it inhabits slow-moving streams, forest waterways and sheltered freshwater habitats with soft sandy or muddy substrates.
These environments often contain leaf litter, submerged roots, branches and dense vegetation, providing plenty of hiding places and natural feeding opportunities.
In the aquarium, Kuhli Loaches thrive in mature planted setups with soft sand, driftwood, smooth stones, caves and shaded resting areas.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–27°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.0
Hardness: Soft water preferred (approximately 1–8 dGH)
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Kept low and stable
Flow: Gentle to moderate preferred
Substrate: Fine, soft sand strongly recommended
Temperament:
Peaceful / Social
Kuhli Loaches are extremely peaceful fish that are well suited to calm tropical community aquariums.
They are social bottom dwellers and should always be kept in groups rather than individually.
When maintained in suitable numbers, they become more confident and may spend more time exploring the aquarium.
They do not normally show aggression towards other fish and will often rest together beneath driftwood, plants or aquarium caves.
Diet:
Omnivore / Micro-predator
Kuhli Loaches naturally feed on small aquatic invertebrates, worms, insect larvae and organic material found within soft substrates.
Offer high-quality sinking catfish pellets, small bottom-feeder tablets and fine sinking granules as their staple diet.
Supplement regularly with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, tubifex, daphnia, cyclops, brineshrimp and finely chopped earthworms.
Because they are mainly nocturnal, feeding shortly before or after the aquarium lights are switched off can help ensure they receive enough food.
Do not rely on leftover food alone. Kuhli Loaches require a varied diet and regular feeding.
Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 75–90 litres for a group of six
A longer aquarium with a footprint of approximately 80 × 30 cm or greater is recommended.
Larger aquariums are preferred for bigger groups or mixed community setups.
Provide plenty of bottom space, soft substrate and sheltered areas where the loaches can hide and forage naturally.
Behaviour & Activity:
The Kuhli Loach is a shy, peaceful fish that spends much of its time exploring the lower levels of the aquarium.
It is most active during the evening, after dark or when the aquarium is quiet.
Kuhli Loaches often squeeze into narrow spaces beneath driftwood, among plant roots or inside caves.
They may occasionally bury themselves in soft sand, leaving only part of their body visible.
When maintained in groups, individuals may rest together and become increasingly confident during feeding.
Their distinctive black bands and orange-yellow body colour create an attractive contrast against pale sand and green aquarium plants.
Community Suitability:
Peaceful Community Fish
The Kuhli Loach is an excellent addition to peaceful tropical community aquariums.
Suitable tankmates include small rasboras, peaceful tetras, pencilfish, Honey Gouramis, small corydoras, otocinclus, peaceful dwarf cichlids with care and other calm community fish.
They can also be housed with peaceful freshwater shrimp, although tiny shrimplets may occasionally be eaten.
Avoid aggressive cichlids, large predatory fish, territorial bottom dwellers and overly boisterous species that may prevent them from feeding.
Tankmates should be selected to ensure the Kuhli Loaches can forage comfortably without intimidation.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Kuhli Loaches should be kept in groups of at least six, with eight or more preferred where aquarium space allows.
A mature aquarium with stable water quality is essential.
Provide fine sand or another soft, smooth substrate, as sharp gravel can damage their delicate barbels and underside.
Include driftwood, leaf litter, caves, smooth stones and dense plants to create secure hiding places.
Kuhli Loaches are naturally shy and may remain hidden for long periods, particularly when first introduced.
Floating plants and subdued lighting can help them feel more comfortable and encourage daytime activity.
Ensure all aquarium decorations are stable, as Kuhli Loaches may burrow beneath objects.
Cover filter intakes and inspect aquarium equipment carefully, as these slender fish can enter surprisingly small openings.
A secure lid is strongly recommended because Kuhli Loaches can jump or escape, particularly when stressed.
Kuhli Loaches possess small defensive spines beneath their eyes, so care should be taken when catching or transporting them.
They can be sensitive to certain aquarium medications, particularly treatments containing copper or other substances that may affect scaleless or small-scaled fish. Always check product suitability before treatment.
Regular partial water changes, clean substrate and suitable sinking foods will help maintain their long-term health.
