The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish is an elegant and active marine butterflyfish recognised for its pale body covered with fine diagonal markings, darker rear dorsal area and contrasting tail pattern. Closely related in appearance to the Vagabond Butterflyfish, this species is an attractive choice for spacious marine aquariums where its active swimming behaviour and striking patterning can be appreciated. Although hardy once settled, its natural feeding behaviour makes it unsuitable for delicate reef displays containing valuable corals.

The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish occurs across the Indian Ocean and western Indo-Pacific region, including coral-rich reef areas, rocky reef zones and rubble habitats.

It is usually associated with shallow to moderately deep reef environments where it spends much of its time swimming around coral and rock structure in search of food.

The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish but may become territorial towards other butterflyfish, particularly similar species.

Adults may occur in pairs, although keeping a single specimen is often the simplest option in a home aquarium unless a compatible established pair is available.

Diet:

The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish naturally feeds on algae, coral polyps and other small reef-associated foods.

In the aquarium, offer a varied diet including frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped prawn, mussel, specialist butterflyfish foods and quality marine pellets.

Algae-based foods and spirulina can also be included to provide additional dietary variety.

Several smaller meals throughout the day are preferable, particularly during the initial settling-in period.

Its adult size and active swimming behaviour mean this species benefits from substantial horizontal swimming space together with established rockwork and shelter.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish is an active daytime swimmer that spends much of its time exploring reef structure and searching rockwork for food.

Provide plenty of open swimming room alongside caves, overhangs and secure rockwork.

It should be kept with suitably calm tankmates that will not continually outcompete or intimidate it.

Reef Safe:

The Indian Vagabond Butterflyfish should not be considered reliably reef safe.

Coral polyps form part of its natural diet, so hard corals and potentially other sessile reef invertebrates may be picked at or consumed.

It is therefore better suited to fish-only systems or aquariums where coral damage is an accepted risk.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with plenty of open swimming space, established rockwork and sheltered areas.

Newly introduced specimens should be monitored carefully to ensure they begin feeding consistently.

Offering a wide variety of frozen and prepared foods can help establish a strong feeding response.

Avoid aggressive tankmates that may prevent the butterflyfish from feeding comfortably.

Stable water quality, good oxygenation and strong filtration are important for long-term health.

Because this species may feed on coral tissue, it should not be selected for a valuable mixed reef aquarium where coral safety is a priority.
