Description
High Red Stripe Gargoyle Gecko
Housing
- Enclosure Type: A 20-gallon tall terrarium is ideal for a single adult High Red Stripe Gargoyle Gecko. They require vertical space for climbing.
- Substrate: Use a substrate like coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, or a mix of both to retain moisture and support humidity levels.
- Decoration: Include plenty of branches, vines, and foliage for climbing and hiding. Artificial or live plants can be used to increase humidity and provide cover.
Temperature and Humidity
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature gradient with a basking spot of about 78-80°F (25-27°C) and a cooler area in the low 70s°F (21-24°C). Night temperatures can drop to the mid-60s°F (18-20°C).
- Humidity: Aim for 50-70% humidity, achievable through daily misting. Use a digital hygrometer to monitor levels.
Diet
- Main Diet: Commercially available crested gecko diet (CGD) is suitable for gargoyle geckos, providing all the necessary nutrients. Offer this 4-5 times a week.
- Insects: Supplement with calcium-dusted crickets, roaches, or mealworms once a week. Ensure insects are no larger than the space between the gecko's eyes.
- Fruit: Occasionally, you can offer mashed fruits like banana, mango, or berries as a treat.
Water and Hydration
- Water Dish: Always have a shallow dish of water available, though gargoyle geckos often prefer to drink water droplets off plants and enclosure walls.
- Misting: Regular misting helps maintain humidity and encourages natural drinking behaviors. Misting twice daily is typically sufficient.
Handling and Interaction
- Taming: Gargoyle geckos can be skittish initially but generally tolerate handling well once accustomed to their owner. Allow your gecko time to adjust to its new environment before attempting to handle it.
- Handling: Use slow and gentle movements. Support the gecko's entire body, and avoid grabbing it by the tail.
Health and Maintenance
- Shedding: Ensure humidity levels are appropriate to aid in shedding. Provide a moist hide if shedding issues occur.
- Check-ups: Regularly inspect your gecko for signs of good health: clear eyes, full tail, and active behavior. Consult a veterinarian if you notice any health issues.
- Enclosure Cleaning: Spot-clean daily and perform a thorough cleaning monthly. This includes replacing the substrate, disinfecting the enclosure, and washing all decorations.
