Description

Hi Fin Banded Goby (Stonogobiops nematodes)

The Hi Fin Banded Goby is a small and elegant marine goby recognised for its slender body, bold dark banding and distinctive elongated first dorsal fin. Peaceful, reef safe and fascinating to observe, it is especially valued for its natural symbiotic relationship with suitable pistol shrimp. This species is best suited to mature reef aquariums with a soft sandy substrate, secure rockwork and calm tankmates.

Common Name:
Hi Fin Banded Goby, Highfin Shrimp Goby

Scientific Name (Latin):
Stonogobiops nematodes

Maximum Size:
Approximately 5–6 cm

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Hi Fin Banded Goby occurs in tropical Indo-Pacific reef environments and is typically associated with sandy and rubble-covered areas close to coral and rocky reef structure.

It naturally occupies burrows and may form a close partnership with suitable pistol shrimp, sharing the burrow while the goby keeps watch for potential danger.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: SG 1.024–1.026
Nitrate: Low and stable
Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

Temperament:
Peaceful

The Hi Fin Banded Goby is a gentle and relatively shy species that is best kept with calm, non-aggressive marine fish.

It may show some territorial behaviour towards similar burrow-dwelling gobies in smaller aquariums, but aggression towards unrelated fish is generally minimal.

Diet:
Carnivore / Planktivore

The Hi Fin Banded Goby naturally feeds on small crustaceans and other tiny marine organisms.

In the aquarium, offer a varied diet including frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped marine foods and quality small marine pellets.

Several small feedings throughout the day are beneficial, especially for newly introduced specimens.

Minimum Tank Size:
Approximately 60 litres

Its small adult size makes the Hi Fin Banded Goby suitable for nano reef aquariums, provided stable water chemistry, suitable substrate and secure shelter are available.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Hi Fin Banded Goby spends much of its time close to the entrance of its burrow, hovering just above the substrate while watching its surroundings.

When partnered with a compatible pistol shrimp, the shrimp excavates and maintains the burrow while the goby acts as a lookout.

The fish may retreat quickly into its burrow when startled but usually becomes more confident once established.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe

The Hi Fin Banded Goby is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.

It is particularly well suited to peaceful mixed reef aquariums.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a mature marine aquarium with a soft sandy substrate, small rubble and secure rockwork suitable for burrow construction.

A compatible pistol shrimp is not essential, but pairing the goby with one can encourage fascinating natural behaviour.

Rockwork should be positioned securely on a stable base so that burrowing activity cannot undermine the aquascape.

Avoid aggressive or highly active tankmates that may intimidate the goby or prevent it from feeding successfully.

A tightly fitted aquarium lid is strongly recommended, as small gobies can jump when startled or newly introduced.

Stable water chemistry, careful acclimation and regular feeding are important for long-term success.

Suitable for:
Beginner to Intermediate
