Green Cobra Guppy – Poecilia reticulata

The Green Cobra Guppy is an attractive freshwater livebearer admired for its subtle green colouration, delicate cobra-style markings and peaceful, active behaviour. This selectively bred variety of Poecilia reticulata is an excellent addition to planted tropical aquariums, peaceful community setups and mixed guppy groups. Hardy, sociable and easy to feed, Green Cobra Guppies are particularly suitable for aquarists looking to establish a colourful livebearer community or maintain a Green Cobra breeding line.

Common Name:Green Cobra Guppy, Green Cobra Guppy, Green Cobra Fancy Guppy, Cobra Guppy

Scientific Name (Latin): Poecilia reticulata

Strain / Form: Green Cobra captive-bred colour and pattern variety – Female

Maximum Size: Approximately 5–6 cm

Water Type: Freshwater

Origin / Natural Habitat: Wild Poecilia reticulata originate from northern South America and the southern Caribbean, including Venezuela, Trinidad and neighbouring regions.

In their natural habitats, guppies inhabit freshwater streams, ponds, drainage channels, slow-moving rivers and vegetated margins.

These environments commonly provide plant cover, gentle water movement and opportunities to graze on algae and small aquatic organisms.

The Green Cobra Guppy is a selectively bred aquarium variety rather than a naturally occurring wild colour form.

In the aquarium, it thrives in mature planted environments with open swimming areas, floating vegetation and stable, mineral-rich water.

Water Parameters: Temperature: 22–28°C pH Range: 7.0–8.5 Hardness: Moderately hard to hard preferred (approximately 10–30 dGH) Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: Kept low and stable Flow: Gentle to moderate preferred

Temperament: Peaceful / Active

Green Cobra Guppies are peaceful, sociable fish that are well suited to community aquariums.

They are generally less focused on courtship than males and enjoy swimming alongside other female guppies.

When kept with males, females may receive frequent attention during breeding, so providing a suitable female-to-male ratio helps reduce stress.

A ratio of at least two or three females to each male is recommended in mixed groups.

Diet: Omnivore / Livebearer Community Diet

Female Green Cobra Guppies readily accept a varied diet of appropriately sized aquarium foods.

Offer high-quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, livebearer foods and spirulina-based flakes as their staple diet.

Supplement with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brineshrimp, cyclops, bloodworm and mosquito larvae.

Vegetable matter is an important part of their diet, and occasional algae-based foods help support digestion and overall condition.

A varied diet is particularly beneficial for females during pregnancy and breeding.

Minimum Tank Size: Approximately 45–60 litres for a small group

Larger aquariums are recommended for breeding groups, mixed guppy communities or tanks containing several livebearer species.

Provide plenty of swimming space alongside live plants and sheltered areas where females can rest.

Behaviour & Activity: The Female Green Cobra Guppy is an active, confident fish that spends much of its time swimming through the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.

Females generally have fuller bodies and less elaborate fins than males, although the Green Cobra strain may still display attractive green tones and patterned finnage.

Like other guppies, this species is a livebearer, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs.

Females can store sperm following mating and may produce several broods without further contact with males.

In well-planted aquariums, some fry may survive among dense vegetation, moss and floating plants.

Community Suitability: Peaceful Community Fish

Female Green Cobra Guppies are excellent additions to peaceful tropical community aquariums.

Suitable tankmates include other guppies, Endlers, platies, mollies, swordtails, peaceful danios, compatible rasboras, corydoras, bristlenose plecos and other calm community species that tolerate similar water conditions.

They can also be housed with peaceful freshwater shrimp, although very small shrimp may occasionally be eaten.

Avoid aggressive fish, fin-nippers, large predators and specialist soft-water fish requiring acidic conditions.

Special Requirements or Care Notes: Keep Female Green Cobra Guppies in a mature aquarium with stable water conditions and good filtration.

They prefer moderately hard to hard, alkaline water and should not be maintained long term in very soft acidic conditions.

A small group of females can be kept together successfully, making them suitable for aquarists who prefer a peaceful female-only guppy aquarium.

If keeping males and females together, aim for at least two or three females per male to reduce persistent breeding attention.

Provide live plants, floating vegetation and sheltered areas to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.

Female guppies breed readily and may produce fry regularly, even after separation from males, because they can retain sperm from previous matings.

Green Cobra Guppies may crossbreed with other guppy varieties, so keep breeding strains separate if maintaining particular colouration and pattern characteristics is important.

Female Green Cobra Guppies may show natural variation in green intensity, cobra markings, tail colour and overall appearance. They should not be expected to display the same vivid colours or fin development as males.

Regular water changes, appropriate stocking and a varied diet will help maintain their health and condition.
