The Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish, Amphiprion biaculeatus, is a spectacular designer form of the Maroon Clownfish, prized for its rich golden body colour, deep maroon face and bold, high-contrast appearance. Unlike a standard Gold Stripe Maroon, the Gold Nugget form develops a much fuller golden coverage across the body, giving it a unique “nugget” look as it matures. Strong, confident and full of personality, this is a standout centrepiece clownfish for marine aquariums, best suited to aquarists who understand the more territorial nature of Maroon Clownfish.

Maximum Size:

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish is a captive-bred designer form developed from Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish lines. The natural form of Amphiprion biaculeatus is found across the Indo-West Pacific, including areas around India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and northern Australia. In the wild, Maroon Clownfish inhabit lagoon and seaward reefs, often living in close association with bubble-tip anemones and sheltered reef structure.

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish are more territorial than many smaller clownfish varieties and can become very defensive of their chosen area, especially once established or paired. Best kept with suitably robust marine fish rather than very timid species. Avoid keeping with other clownfish species or multiple maroon clownfish unless attempting a carefully managed bonded pair.

Diet:
Omnivorous. Offer a varied marine diet including quality marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brineshrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepod-based foods and occasional algae-based foods. Captive-bred specimens usually adapt well to prepared foods, but regular variety will help maintain strong colour, body condition and long-term health.

Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of around 150 litres is recommended for a single specimen, with larger aquariums preferred for a bonded pair or mixed marine community. Provide mature rockwork, caves, open swimming space and clear territory breaks.

Behaviour & Activity:
A bold, active and highly territorial clownfish that will usually claim a specific area of the aquarium and defend it strongly. It may host a bubble-tip anemone if one is present, but an anemone is not essential, especially for captive-bred specimens. Maroon Clownfish form size-based pairs, with the larger individual becoming female and the smaller fish remaining male. Pairing should be done carefully, as size difference and temperament can be important. A secure lid is recommended, as startled marine fish can jump.

Reef Safe:

Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish are considered reef safe and do not normally nip corals or clam mantles. They can be kept in reef aquariums, but their territorial nature should be considered when choosing tank mates. If they host certain corals, they may occasionally irritate them through constant rubbing or defensive behaviour, but this is not feeding damage.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept singly or as a carefully matched bonded pair. Maroon Clownfish can be aggressive towards other clownfish and similarly territorial fish, so stocking order and tank mate choice are important. Juveniles may start paler and develop stronger golden colouration as they mature. An anemone is not required, but if one is provided, a mature aquarium with stable water quality, suitable lighting and appropriate flow is essential. Due to its adult size and assertive temperament, this species is better suited to aquarists wanting a bold centrepiece clownfish rather than a very peaceful community species.
