Description

Genicanthus Melanispilos- Male

Genicanthus melanospilos (Spotbreast or Swallowtail Angelfish) requires a 70+ gallon (approx. 250+ liters) mature reef tank with ample swimming space, moderate flow, and hiding spots. These reef-safe, planktivorous fish are generally hardy but prone to jumping and stress-induced diseases like flukes. They thrive on a diet of mysis, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods, best kept in pairs or as a single male with multiple females.

Key Care Requirements:

Tank Size & Environment: A minimum of 70 gallons (250 liters) is needed, with a preference for a tall, well-established aquarium (100+ gallons preferred for pairs). They require plenty of live rock for hiding, grazing, and structure, but they also need open, moderate-to-strong flow areas for swimming.

Reef Safety: Generally considered safe for corals and invertebrates, although they may occasionally pick at small, delicate corals.

Diet: They are planktivores that need varied, frequent feedings (2–3 times daily). Their diet should include frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, spirulina, and algae-based flakes/pellets.

Compatibility: Best kept singly or in a male-female pair. Multiple females can be kept with one male, but two males will fight. Avoid aggressive tankmates.

Health & Sensitivity: They are susceptible to flukes, velvet, and white spot. They are sensitive to high nitrate levels.

Behavior: They are known jumpers and should be housed in an aquarium with a secure lid.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 23-27°C (73-81°F)
pH: 8.1-8.4
Salinity (SG): 1.020-1.025
