The Freckle Face Tang is a striking and active marine surgeonfish recognised for its pale face covered with fine speckled markings, streamlined body and contrasting darker colouration towards the rear. As it matures, the facial pattern becomes increasingly distinctive, giving the species its characteristic “freckled” appearance. Active, robust and constantly on the move, it requires a spacious, mature marine aquarium with plenty of swimming room, strong filtration and established rockwork for grazing.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
The Freckle Face Tang occurs across the tropical Indo-Pacific and is associated with coral reefs, reef slopes, channels and other open reef environments.

It typically inhabits areas with substantial hard substrate, good water movement and access to naturally occurring algae and organic films.

The Freckle Face Tang is generally peaceful towards unrelated marine fish but can become territorial towards other surgeonfish, particularly similarly shaped Acanthurus species.

It is usually best maintained as the only Acanthurus tang unless the aquarium is exceptionally spacious and introductions are carefully planned.

Diet:
Herbivore / Algae Grazer

The Freckle Face Tang naturally spends much of its time grazing algae and associated organic material from reef surfaces.

In the aquarium, provide regular access to dried nori, marine algae sheets, spirulina-based foods, quality herbivore pellets and marine flakes.

A varied diet can also include occasional frozen mysis and other marine foods, but plant-based foods should form the foundation of its long-term diet.

Its adult size and active swimming behaviour mean the Freckle Face Tang requires substantial horizontal swimming space together with mature rockwork for grazing and shelter.

Behaviour & Activity:
The Freckle Face Tang is an energetic daytime swimmer that spends much of its time cruising through open water and grazing across rockwork.

Provide extensive unobstructed swimming areas alongside secure reef structure and sheltered spaces where the fish can retreat.

Strong circulation and excellent oxygenation are particularly beneficial for this active surgeonfish.

Reef Safe:

The Freckle Face Tang is generally considered reef safe and does not normally damage healthy corals, clams or established ornamental invertebrates.

Its natural grazing behaviour can be useful in large reef aquariums by helping control nuisance algae and maintaining cleaner rock surfaces.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Provide a large, mature marine aquarium with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation and substantial open swimming room.

Regular access to marine algae is essential even where natural grazing is available.

Like other surgeonfish, the Freckle Face Tang possesses sharp defensive spines near the base of the tail. Care should therefore be taken during handling and aquarium maintenance.

Avoid keeping it with highly aggressive tankmates or multiple similarly shaped tangs unless the aquarium provides exceptional space.

Surgeonfish can be susceptible to external parasites and transport-related stress, so careful acclimation, quarantine and consistently stable water chemistry are strongly recommended.

This species should only be purchased with its adult size and long-term swimming requirements fully considered.
